Dal Stevens disc jockey

The rock 'n' roll years

In 1991, when I wrote ‘Bradford’s Rock n' Roll the Golden Years 1959-65’, most of the book was about me, firstly, with my own groups, ‘Dal Stevens and the Blue Jays’ and ‘Dal Stevens and the Four Dukes’. This was followed by my life as a disc jockey for five years from 1960 until 1965 with Top Rank at the Gaumont and Majestic Ballrooms in Bradford.

It was in 1965 when I decided that my rock 'n' roll world was changing and would be taken over by the beat boom with Mod style and Beatle suits, thus calling it a day for my music world. Music tastes changed almost overnight with the advent of Blues, R&B, Soul, Harmony Groups, and Pop Art, progressing to psychedelically painted trucks, long hair, drugs, flower power, hippies, and the music associated with all this.

Now the songs and music that explored the ups and downs of teenage romance sung by the Tabs, Bobbies, and Frankie’s were on the decline. It was at this time I decided to ‘pack my tent and slowly steal away’ from my rock and roll world. As the book was almost finished, suddenly, as an afterthought, I decided to try to add a few of our local groups and celebrities. I, therefore, devoted the epilogue, of the book, to those whom I could contact. However, time was short due to the book's forthcoming publication, and I only managed to cover a few, with only brief details of their careers.

It has now become very apparent that there is a need to record something in more detail about our very own local ‘Rock and Roll Groups’, who, through this period 1954–1966 gave immeasurable pleasure to thousands of young people in Bradford and the surrounding districts. Bradford had a wealth of talent – vocalists, guitarists, and drummers – who compared favourably with the top groups of the country.

Our local groups exported this talent to other parts of the county, and in some cases nationally, but they were never recognised with a title like the ‘Bradford’ or the ‘The Yorkshire Sound’. Most groups over the border seemed to acquire some success, but our very own talented groups never achieved the fame that most of them richly deserved.

Two tracks were recorded by Derek and his group.

'Move it'  was recorded by Richard Harding and Emile Ford at Richard Harding's studio in 1991.

'Shaking All Over'  was recorded at Richard Harding's studio in 1995.

Sandra Parish 1937 - 2022  'My Sandie'

It is with deep personal sadness that my partner of 18 years Sandra Parish passed away in August 2022 while this website was being created.

There wouldn't have been an original book if it hadn't been for Sandie's tireless typing of the original book manuscript over three years. If it hadn't been for Sandie, I would probably still be typing the manuscript today.

Sandie will be missed by me, her family, and many friends, who all loved her. Sandie was a beautiful lady. Never a hair out of place and always elegant. Sandie was well known as a singer (Sandra Anstey) and played her part in Bradford's rock 'n' roll history.

She will be missed by many.

Rest in peace My Sandie' and thank you for the love and the time we had together.

Derek.

Sandra had a career singing in many Bradford groups and at clubs like the Lyceum and Fiesta. This recording was made a few years ago with her son Steven.

This is Sandie's last recording in 2015. Such a fabulous voice.

Sandie joined me at the book launch held in Bingley. I have said before that without Sandie typing the manuscript I would still be typing to this day!

Signing copies of When Bradford Rocked Waterstones Bradford

One of the many signing sessions held in Waterstone's Bradford. I had three books in print at the time - 'Bradford's Own', 'Bradford Born and Bred' and my latest book 'When Bradford Rocked'. I am indebted to Graham Herrington who supported me on book signings for all three titles in Morrison's and Waterstones over many years.

Bradford born, Derek AJ Lister, who has penned books about Bradford’s past, spent many a memorable evening in the ballrooms at the Majestic and the Gaumont where he worked as a DJ.

Well-known within the music scene, Derek sang with' Dal Stevens and The Blue Jays' and 'Dal Stevens and the Four Jukes', he recalls dancing on the Gaumont’s beautiful wooden dance floor.

“Supposedly it was one of the best in the UK,” he says, referring to the maple ballroom floor, known as the ‘Valtor’ floor providing a traditional style yet the modern process of the sprung floor.

“They were really lovely days.”

What a revelation it would have been if we'd had today's digital cameras to record our rock 'n' roll history.

You were lucky if you had a Kodak Box Brownie. And then you only had black and white images.
