One of the many singers that influenced our local girls was Brenda Lee. And a favorite song was 'Let's Jump the Broomstick'

LET'S NOT FORGET OUR GIRLS - THEIR STORIES CAN BE READ IN 'WHEN BRADFORD ROCKED'

Anne Mason, Geoff and the Fairlaines

Anne Mason was unique to the groups in Bradford as she was actually the manager of the group and not the singer. Anne lived in Baildon. Managing a rock 'n' roll group in the early 1960s was quite an achievement and a rarity. And she was only 21.

Another favourite of our girl singers  was this Connie Francis classic 'Stupid Cupid'

THE GALLAGHER SISTERS

Bradford sisters Pat and Jean Gallagher were two young vocalists who joined the group  Billy Royal and the Four Aces for eighteen months between 1963-1964. It was a good move as the girls added glamour, as well as being extremely good vocalists, Pat with the ballads, and Jean the rock 'n' roll. (Patricia Gallagher 1946-1998. Jean Gallagher 1949 - 2004). Sadly we have no photographs of the girls, but add this tribute to them.

Part of that scene, and not forgotten.

See pages 293-296  'When Bradford Rocked' for their full story.

I always thought that many female singers got overlooked. I spoke to, and met many of them whilst writing the book, and found their stories were almost the same. A few may have lived in one of the new council houses sprouting up around the city. Others were living in a back-to-back house with no bathroom and an outside toilet. Some had made their own dresses to complement the groups, and most of them were working full-time jobs.

This would mean a bus home, a quick change to join the group, and probably using the bus again, or if lucky the group van would pick them up. However, I was surprised by how many used public transport. Some kept with the same group others changed, or disillusioned, would call it a day.

Speaking to some of them later, all of them were glad to have taken part in our rock 'n' roll days and to be recognised by their children and grandchildren in a book. So, in a way, they all made it to the top, and are remembered today. So read their stories that celebrated our lovely rock 'n' roll girls.
