The Gaumont ballroom

The unsung heroes of the Top Rank club. The staff who kept the Gaumont and the Majestic ballrooms going

during the early days of rock 'n' roll. Two Managers are present - Ray Moore of the Gaumont on the left side, Laurie Lawrence, of the Majestic on the far right.

' The way we were' - 1960. The smart and wonderful staff of the Gaumont cinema and theatre from an age gone by. Mr.Philcox was the manager, wearing glasses in this photo. On his left is the assistant manager, Norman Ridler. At the back on the right, with gloves and epaulettes, is Commisionaire, George. Well - loved by the many 'Saturday Morning Club' youngsters in the 1940s and 1950's.

Does anyone recognise any of the staff ? Let us know via the Contact form.

Diana Winnard winner of the Gaumont Miss Bellaire competition with' Raymond' otherwise "Mr Teasy - Weasy" the Judge.

1961 Miss Personality Contest, Joyce Harvey receives a £5 prize from Tony, Assistant Manager, while the runners-up look on, Sue and Jean

Enjoy the carousel of memories. And our thanks to the Philcox family archive.

The Teenage show Gaumont theatre Bradford

Regulars at the Gaumont might recall the night pop star Robb Storme turned up. He is pictured with young admirers when he was a guest at a ‘Drinka Pinta Milk Week’ rock 'n’ roll night in November 1961.  Photo credit to Bradford Telegraph & Argus.

I can remember all their faces, but not their names.

Do you recognise any of them?

MARK NICHOLSON

Mark Nicholson has been actively involved in getting the Odeon / Gaumont back in use. We owe him for his research into the groups and their dates at the Gaumont along with his production work on the 1991 Golden Years of Bradford Rock 'n' Roll  launch video for this website. Mark has been able to help with names and dates for some of the various managers that came and went throughout the Gaumont's life and photographs from the dances and evenings held there.

Bringing the Beat Back to Bradford  from Nov 5th, 2022 - 11th March  2023 shines a light on the building’s vibrant history as a cinema, dance hall, music venue, and bingo hall. The exhibition features stories from the community, artifacts and memorabilia, oral histories, and a mix of official and vernacular photographs.

Mark's book was published in Nov 2022 called

The People's Palace: The Story Of Bradford's New Vic

£10.00 + £4.00 pp

available from Mark directly or from the Impressions Gallery in Centenary Sq.

Mark Nicholson narrates the story of the Beatles at the Gaumont in 1964. Mark was kind enough to do a vast amount of research into which groups played at The Gaumont over the years and we have included that in The Gaumont history page. Here Mark narrates the story of the Beatles coming to Bradford.
